OUR STORY
Bringing diverse perspectives into harmony
Music has the power to enhance all lives
This core belief has always been at the heart of our organization. When musicians and lifelong friends Orbert Davis and Mark Ingram saw the powerful impact of the arts on elementary school students, they founded a music education program to expand the number of lives music could touch. In 2004, Orbert Davis received an invitation from the Jazz Institute of Chicago to “think big” when planning his appearance at that year's Jazz Festival, and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic was born. This performance marked the first time a resident Chicago Jazz artist headlined the festival, not to mention being accompanied by a 55-piece jazz orchestra. Shortly after, the decision was made to combine the music education program and the orchestra, creating a unique education-centered performing ensemble.
CJP Values:
Art: We combine classical, jazz, and cultural music traditions, performed by a professional orchestra, to create fresh, new musical experiences for audiences in Chicago and around the world.
Accessibility: Our work with young people makes music education and performance more accessible while also building valuable life skills.
Diversity: We bring diverse perspectives together through performance and education; our diverse ensemble is 40-50% people of color.
We do things differently - on purpose
Chicago Jazz Philharmonic uses the power of music to unite people, build bridges between communities, and spark creativity. While other organizations focus solely on performance or education, we seek to bring people together to find common ground. As a professional orchestra, we combine classical and jazz music traditions in new and unexpected ways. Through thrilling performances, meaningful arts education, and creative professional development, we help people tap into music’s ability to enhance all lives.
Today, the orchestra runs a host of vibrant programs, engaging thousands of audience members through concerts, and serving over 1,000 Chicago Public School students in music education annually.

The Founders
"Heart and Soul” -Best friends for more than 35 years, Orbert Davis and Mark Ingram founded MusicAlive in 1998 in an effort to repair the damaging effects of the elimination of music arts programming in Chicago schools. Upon witnessing the powerful impact of the arts on elementary students, their vision expanded to give birth to the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic. Jazz: Alive, now the center of Chicago Jazz Philharmonic’s educational initiatives, reflects a deep commitment to the arts and how it impacts the lives of individuals, diversifies the culture of a community, and defines the fabric of a city.
